Headed to a park for a quick workout, to play pickleball or watch your child’s game? Be aware that thieves may be headed to the park as well – not to exercise, but to steal your personal items.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District has seen several of these crimes in recent months. In fact, since November, there have been five cases at two different parks – Pine Trails Park and Terramar Park. In these cases, victims were playing sports while thieves stole electronics – mostly cellphones – from inside bags or on the bleachers. Some of the victims in these cases are adults and some are juveniles.
At this time, BSO detectives are investigating these cases and seeking information from the public to solve the crimes.
There are important tips for the public to remember about safely storing or protecting their personal items while working out or visiting a park:
• Travel light. Only take necessary personal items to the park.
• Keep your car keys and cellphone with you at all times.
• Keep other personal items in your locked car out of sight.
• Stay alert. While you exercise or watch your children play, be aware of your surroundings.
Parents, it’s also important to remind your children of these tips. Children should be encouraged to place their electronics in a safe place or avoid taking them to the park while they attend practice or play.
Always remember that if you see something suspicious, report it to law enforcement. In the aforementioned investigation, anyone with information is asked to contact BSO Sergeant Stacie Venezia at 954-753-5050 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch app. If you wish to remain anonymous, please contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS(8477), online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS(8477) from any cellphone in the United States.
