Every day, the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office respond to crashes that could have been prevented. The causes of many of these crashes have been linked to speeding, running red lights, and distracted driving.

BSO Regional Traffic Unit Lt. JC Barros says that among the three, distracting driving has increasingly become the most dangerous due to people texting while driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed the lives of 3,308 people in 2022.

BSO urges drivers to avoid texting while driving or engaging in any activity that can divert attention away from the road.

“One glance at your phone can cost a life,” Lt. Barros said. “Put it down. Slow down, buckle up, and stop completely. Traffic safety starts with you!”
