Description of Incident
Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating a fatal crash that occurred in West Park over the weekend.
The preliminary on-scene investigation revealed that at approximately 10:18 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, Mathis Frederick was traveling eastbound in a 2022 Tesla Model Y on Pembroke Road approaching Southwest 46th Avenue. At the same time, Breyon Sampson was traveling westbound in a 2018 Honda Accord on Pembroke Road. At some point, Sampson attempted to make a left turn to travel southbound on Southwest 46th Avenue when his Honda was struck by the Tesla in a T-bone type collision. Detectives say the impact caused the Honda to split in half.
BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded. According to investigators, Frederick, Sampson, and five passengers were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. One of the passengers in Sampson’s car, identified as Edger Surles, was later pronounced deceased. Frederick, Sampson, and the other passengers sustained injuries listed as not life-threatening.
The investigation continues.
