Scammers are constantly finding new ways to target older adults, and unfortunately, their tactics are becoming more convincing every day.
Whether it’s someone pretending to be a grandchild in trouble, a government agency demanding immediate payment, a bank warning you about “fraud,” or a fake tech support representative claiming your computer has a virus, these scams all have one thing in common: they create a sense of urgency to pressure you into acting before you have time to think.
Remember these simple tips:
BSO and law enforcement agencies will NEVER call asking for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or personal banking information.
Do not click on suspicious links or unexpected attachments.
Never send money because of an unexpected phone call, text message or email.
Never share personal, financial or banking information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
Verify requests by contacting the organization directly using an official phone number or website.
If something feels suspicious, hang up immediately and report the incident to local authorities.
I encourage you to share this information with your parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends. Together, we can help protect the members of our community who scammers target most often.
BSO’s non-emergency number is 954-764-4357. In an emergency, call or text 911.
