Description of Incident
The second suspect in the officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Lauderhill has been arrested.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives, Reece Anglin was taken into custody without incident on Friday, Feb. 14, by Tampa Police Department officers. He was arrested on a warrant related to the shooting. Following his arrest, Anglin was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. On Thursday, Feb. 20, Anglin was transferred to the Broward Main Jail.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is conducting an investigation into the shooting that involved two members of law enforcement -- a BSO deputy and a Lauderhill Police Department officer.
According to investigators, around 5:54 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, members of the BSO Gang Investigations Task Force, which involves law enforcement members from BSO, Lauderhill Police and other municipalities, were conducting an operation at the Calypso Cay apartments in the 4100 block of Northwest 21st Street in Lauderhill. During the operation, two armed adult males confronted two members of law enforcement and pointed guns at them. The BSO deputy drew his duty weapon, identified himself as a law enforcement officer and issued commands for the subjects to drop their firearms and get on the ground. Neither of the subjects complied. Both subjects then fired at the law enforcement officers, and the officers returned fire. One of the armed subjects, Tafari Elliot, was struck and fled. The second subject, Anglin, also fled.
Responding officers took Elliot into custody within the apartment complex and began providing medical aid. He was then transported to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. Anglin managed to evade law enforcement until his capture last Friday. Neither law enforcement officer was injured during the armed altercation. On scene, detectives recovered several firearms.
The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation. FDLE is investigating the use of force aspect of this incident, while BSO’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the criminal actions of Elliot and Anglin. Elliot is also facing two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, and he remains hospitalized.
As per BSO policy, the deputy that fired his weapon was placed on administrative assignment following the shooting.
