If you own a drone, do not fly it in or near an airport. Airports have an exclusionary zone that covers both the one-mile area surrounding the runway, designated as a no-fly zone, and the area within five miles of the airport, which requires government approval.

Flying drones near an airport is not only illegal—it’s potentially catastrophic. Drones present serious threat to manned aircrafts, regardless of their size. Even the smallest drone can cause a collision that endangers lives.

To operate a drone within the restricted five-mile radius of an airspace, pilots must first obtain authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Unauthorized flights can result in fines of up to $250,000 and possible state or federal prison sentences.

“If you fly drones, do it safely,” BSO Airport Capt. Brian Montgomery said. “Follow the rules and never take risks that could endanger others. If you see unsafe drone activity near the airport, report it. Let’s all work together to keep the skies safe.”
