NEW POLL SHOWS OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR BSO, BSFR AMONG DEERFIELD BEACH RESIDENTS
| PIO Number | 25-9-15 | Date | Sept. 18, 2025 |
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is committed to providing updated and factual information to the public regarding the ongoing negotiations of the public safety contracts with the city of Deerfield Beach.
There are two new developments in the negotiations.
First, a new poll shows overwhelming support from Deerfield Beach residents for the work of BSO and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue. The poll found that 82% of respondents gave BSO and BSFR a positive job rating. Sixty-three percent of residents polled support a contract renewal with BSO. That percentage even increased to 75% in favor of the Deerfield Beach City Commission renewing the contract with BSO over the alternative of the city setting up its own police and fire departments. The poll also found that 72% of Deerfield Beach residents believe the city could cover the cost of a new BSO contract by cutting spending rather than raising taxes. For years, BSO and BSFR employees have been underpaid. The requested salary increases will bring the pay for these first responders in line with similarly sized agencies.
Second, on September 15, the Deerfield Beach City Commission approved the BSO budget for police and fire services, which means the BSO contract is in full force and effect through March 2026. Accordingly, BSO has rescinded the letter from June 20, 2025, which provided a notice of termination of the public safety contracts to the city commission.
BSO is working hard to maintain its 35-year partnership with Deerfield Beach and wants to continue that relationship. BSO has provided the Deerfield Beach City Commission with three options for a contract moving forward. The options were presented in good faith and reflect BSO’s unyielding commitment to provide high-quality public safety service for law enforcement and fire rescue to the residents and visitors in Deerfield Beach.
