Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating a fatal motorcycle versus semi-truck crash that occurred in Pompano Beach yesterday afternoon.

According to investigators, the collision occurred at approximately 3:52 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, near the 1900 block of North Powerline Road. The preliminary on-scene investigation revealed the decedent, Dajuanye Winters, was riding a 2019 Yamaha R3 motorcycle southbound on North Powerline Road, in the far-left thru lane, approaching the 1900 block. At the same time, Alexis Rodriguez was traveling northbound in a 2006 International Tractor equipped with a 53’ Trailer.

As Rodriguez conducted a left turn, at a break in the median to travel west into a warehouse district, the semi traveled across the southbound lanes of North Powerline Road. Investigators say the motorcyclist observed the semi and aggressively applied the rear brakes of his Yamaha. However, the Yamaha entered the center-thru lane and collided with the very rear portion of the semi. The motorcyclist came to a final rest near the collision site while the motorcycle itself slid over the pavement a short distance away.

Detectives say following the crash, Rodriguez stopped the semi, walked over to the motorcyclist, and was informed by others on scene that 911 had been called. Rodriguez told investigators he then checked the tractor and observed no damage. Assuming he was not involved in the crash, Rodriguez continued to the loading dock and loaded the trailer. While doing so, detectives say Rodriguez noticed chipped paint matching the motorcyclist’s Yamaha. Rodriguez was contacted by BSO deputies and cooperated with authorities.

The investigation continues.
