Description of Incident
Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating a fatal crash in Dania Beach that killed a scooter rider.
According to detectives, shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, the driver of a 2024 Hyundai Tuscon, Gregory Ornstein-Bowers, was traveling westbound on Stirling Road in the center thru lane. At the same time, James Small was operating an electric scooter and was traveling southbound across Stirling Road from north to south. Ornstein-Bowers told detectives that he did not see the scooter rider until he was in front of him and attempted to swerve to avoid a crash. However, his vehicle struck the left side of the scooter. The crash caused Small to be ejected and come to a rest in the center thru lane.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported Small to Memorial Regional Hospital. He was pronounced deceased on Wednesday, Dec. 25.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
