Description of Incident
The Broward Sheriff’s Office arrested a man for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felony murder following an incident on Sunday night. Detectives say the suspect, who was driving a stolen vehicle, crashed that vehicle into a canal causing the death of his passenger.
At approximately 7:25 p.m., on March 22, a BSO deputy observed the driver of a white GMC van, later identified as Michael Malik Harvey, driving recklessly in the 4000 block of Southwest 33rd Avenue in West Park. A check of the vehicle’s tag revealed the van was reported stolen out of Miami-Dade County.
According to investigators, the BSO deputy activated his emergency lights and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Investigators say Harvey failed to stop, striking the deputy’s marked vehicle as he fled the area. The BSO deputy did not initiate a pursuit and stayed at the scene of the accident.
According to the preliminary investigation, an officer with the Pembroke Park Police Department observed the stolen vehicle traveling eastbound on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, just west of Interstate 95. When the stolen vehicle reached an area near Oakwood Plaza, Harvey intentionally turned the stolen vehicle towards the marked police vehicle, forcing the officer to take evasive action to avoid being struck.
A multi-agency pursuit ensued based on the aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
The investigation revealed Harvey drove the vehicle into an RV park located at 2323 State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale. Detectives say Harvey crashed the vehicle through a closed metal exit gate driving the wrong way and entered a canal.
BSO deputies, BSO Dive Team and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Harvey was removed from the water and transported to a local hospital with injuries listed as not life-threatening. An unidentified female passenger was also removed from the water and transported to the hospital. She was later pronounced deceased.
Detectives with BSO’s Homicide, Crime Scene and Internal Affairs units responded to the scene to investigate. FDLE is investigating the in-custody death portion of this incident, and BSO detectives are investigating the original incident that began in West Park and the homicide of the unidentified female.
Harvey has been arrested and faces several charges including felony murder, aggravated fleeing and eluding causing death, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, grand theft of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a crash involving an occupied vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing.
