Description of Incident
Despite several hours of communication and de-escalation efforts, an encounter between Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and an armed man ended in a deputy-involved shooting.
Shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday, May 29, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a disturbance involving a male subject armed with knives in the 800 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard in Oakland Park. According to detectives, preliminary investigation revealed the armed suspect, Kevin Dominick Almonte, was threatening residents. When BSO deputies responded, Almonte retreated inside an apartment and barricaded himself.
Due to Almonte making threats of possessing firearms, propane tanks and bombs inside the apartment, deputies secured the area and evacuated nearby residents. BSO’s K-9, SWAT team and Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene and later an arrest warrant was issued. Oakland Park Fire Rescue also responded to the scene.
BSO deputies spent several hours attempting to communicate with Almonte and have him exit the residence peacefully. At some point during the encounter, Almonte who was armed with knives, advanced toward deputies and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue began life-saving measures and transported him to Broward Health Medical Center. Almonte was pronounced deceased a short time later at the hospital. No other injuries were reported. Deputies conducted safety sweeps to ensure residents could safely return to their homes.
FDLE is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review of the incident.
As per BSO policy, the deputy who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
