INSIDE BSO: HOMELESS OUTREACH UNIT
| PIO Number | 25-2-25 | Date | Feb. 21, 2025 |
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is comprised of many specialized units that respond to a variety of public safety situations. Among these trained divisions is BSO’s Homeless Outreach Unit, which works to end the cycle of homelessness by helping individuals who are experiencing homelessness recapture and regain their lives.
BSO has at least one Homeless Outreach specialist in every district. These deputies educate other deputies on how to conduct a proper needs assessment on individuals experiencing homelessness. Through this assessment, deputies are able to identify the social services needed and assist individuals with accessing Broward County’s continuum of care. This ongoing effort makes a difference one family and one person at a time.
“It’s rewarding to help another human being or families get on their feet and get back to the reality of not being homeless,” said BSO Homeless Outreach Deputy Leonard Smith Jr.
Deputy Smith Jr. has been with BSO for approximately 34 years and has spent the last two and a half years as a part of BSO’s Homeless Outreach Unit. He believes that to truly help the unhoused we need to approach them with humanity and understanding.
