Description of Incident
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a non-fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred in Tamarac on Sunday, Nov. 30.
At approximately 9:03 p.m., Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a male actively firing a gun inside a residence near the 7800 block of Northwest 74th Avenue. When BSO deputies arrived on scene, they heard multiple gunshots and observed 35-year-old David Pagan standing in the middle of the roadway armed with a gun.
According to investigators, deputies made multiple commands for Pagan to drop his weapon. At some point, detectives say Pagan raised or pointed the firearm at the responding deputies. Fearing for their lives and the lives of others, two BSO deputies discharged their weapons.
Following the deputy-involved shooting, Pagan fell to the ground, and two firearms were recovered next to him. Tamarac Fire Rescue responded and transported Pagan to Broward Health North, where he is currently receiving treatment.
FDLE is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review of the incident.
As per BSO policy, the two deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
Pagan faces seven counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and one count of discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling. The investigation continues.
