The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Sunday night in unincorporated Central Broward near Fort Lauderdale.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives, at approximately 5:35 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications was notified of a possible disturbance involving a subject walking around with a firearm with children in the area, and possibly under the influence of drugs.

When BSO deputies arrived on scene they were told by witnesses that the male suspect went into his residence, still armed with a gun. Deputies were informed that two additional people were also inside the home. Deputies set up a perimeter around the residence and gave continuous commands for the suspect, identified as Edward Jerrel Dolison, to exit.

He eventually exited the residence holding a firearm in his hand. According to detectives, Dolison then held the gun to his head, did not comply with commands to put down the firearm and ran back into the residence where one person was still inside. Detectives said a deputy then moved toward the open front door and made visual contact with Dolison. At that point, Dolison fired his gun resulting in the deputy discharging his weapon.

Deputies then entered the residence, where Dolison was located on the living room floor with a firearm in his hand. The firearm was removed from Dolison’s hand, and he was pronounced deceased on scene. Two firearms were located inside the home, one of which had a scratched off serial number.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review of the incident. The deputy who fired his weapon is on administrative assignment, pending further investigation.

The Broward County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
