The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon in West Park.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives, around 12:22 p.m. on June 1, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a disturbance involving a weapon at 4017 S.W. 26th Street. When deputies arrived, the suspect in the incident, Joshua Gullatt, punched a deputy in the face, knocking the deputy to the ground. A second BSO deputy attempted to use a Taser to subdue Gullatt but was unsuccessful. Gullatt then struck the second BSO deputy before running into a bedroom in the residence and arming himself with a deadly weapon. Due to the ongoing threat, one of the deputies fired their weapon at Gullatt, striking him.

Deputies immediately began providing medical aid to Gullatt, and paramedics subsequently transported Gullatt to a nearby hospital where he received treatment.

Paramedics also transported the BSO deputy who was punched in the face to the hospital. The deputy was treated for his injuries and released.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review of the incident. The deputy who fired his weapon is on administrative assignment pending the investigation.

Gullatt will face two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, one count of resisting arrest with violence and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
