Description of Incident
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Monday evening in Davie.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 29, members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Gang Task Force and VIPER (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) Unit coordinated efforts to locate 27-year-old Napolian Marquez Powell. Powell was wanted on active criminal warrants for fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement and was also the subject of a DNA warrant related to a Broward County firearms investigation.
Detectives located Powell at around 7 p.m. inside a white 2026 Tesla at a Wawa gas station near the 6300 block of Stirling Road in Davie. As deputies attempted to make contact, the armed felon fled the area on foot and ran across the street. Shortly after fleeing, deputies made contact with Powell near the 4200 block of Davie Road Extension.
As the law enforcement officers tried again to take Powell into custody, he actively resisted arrest and a physical altercation occurred.
Detectives said during the altercation, deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation by taking a tactical retreat and repeatedly ordered Powell to surrender his gun. Fearing for their safety, deputies discharged their weapons, striking Powell. He was pronounced deceased at the scene in the McDonald’s parking lot.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the deputy-involved shooting. Detectives with BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led up to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review of the incident. As per BSO policy, six deputies have been placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
The Broward County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The investigation continues.
