Description of Incident
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday afternoon.
The incident began around 1:49 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, when Broward County Regional Communications received a call reporting a domestic aggravated assault in the 7600 block of Granville Drive in Tamarac. The report indicated that an armed adult male, Robert Drangel, arrived at a residence and pointed a gun at his estranged wife and another female. Drangel then fled the scene in a vehicle that belonged to one of the victims.
According to detectives, Drangel was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor due to his arrest in September for aggravated stalking after injunction for protection against domestic violence. Deputies issued a BOLO for Drangel and the vehicle.
At approximately 2:15 p.m., the vehicle Drangel was in was located near Hollywood Boulevard and I-95. A multi-agency pursuit ensued and continued northbound. A BSO deputy executed a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver on the vehicle in the area of 200 Southwest 21st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, bringing the vehicle to a stop. Shortly after, perceiving a threat from Drangel inside the vehicle, four BSO deputies discharged their firearms, striking Drangel. Paramedics from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Drangel deceased.
On scene, deputies recovered a firearm.
Detectives with BSO’s Homicide, Crime Scene and Internal Affairs units responded to the shooting scene. FDLE is investigating the fatal deputy-involved shooting portion of this incident, and BSO detectives are investigating the original incident that occurred in Tamarac. Per BSO policy, the deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
The investigation is ongoing.
