Description of Incident
Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that killed a man in unincorporated western Broward County.
Shortly before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a vehicle in a canal near the 18000 block of Krome Avenue. BSO deputies in Weston responded to the scene. BSO’s Dive Team, Missing Persons Unit, Marine Patrol and the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Unit were also requested. On Wednesday evening, deputies located a 2007 Chevy Tahoe that was submerged in the canal. However, no individuals were located at that time.
Early Thursday morning a family member of Ramiro Gomez-Diaz returned to the location and observed a body in the water. BSO deputies responded and removed Gomez-Diaz’s body from the water, and he was pronounced deceased.
BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit was notified and responded. The preliminary investigation revealed that, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway and into the canal. Detectives saw tire marks leading to the canal, and a bumper and headlight were observed floating in the water.
The investigation is ongoing.
