Description of Incident
A pedestrian died following a crash in North Lauderdale on Sunday evening.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash. According to detectives, around 8:12 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the area of Southwest 71st Avenue and Kimberly Boulevard in North Lauderdale. The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a 2018 BMW X2 was traveling northbound on Southwest 71st Avenue approaching Kimberly Boulevard in the left thru lane when the pedestrian, Mekhi Elme, was walking from east to west in the north crosswalk. The BMW then struck Elme.
Paramedics with North Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported Elme to Broward Health Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.
The driver and a passenger in the vehicle advised that the northbound traffic had a green traffic signal. A witness stated that the pedestrian was looking at his phone as he was crossing the street.
Neither excessive speed nor impairment are suspected as contributing factors. The investigation is ongoing.
