A man living in Georgia was arrested for attempted sexual battery to an incapacitated woman that occurred 13 years ago in Dania Beach.

According to investigators, on Monday, January 21, 2013, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an attempted sexual battery that occurred the day prior during an event called Igloo South Florida near the 2600 block of Southwest 31st Street in Dania Beach.

Investigators met with the victim, who stated she was at the event and became incapacitated. The victim said she woke up in an unknown vehicle, with two unknown male subjects. The victim said her pants had been pulled down. One of the subjects left DNA evidence behind on the victim. BSO investigated this case for years but without significant leads, the case turned cold.

In November 2025, the BSO Special Victims Unit (SVU) was assigned to this case, and the innovative advances of DNA testing would prove pivotal. Investigators obtained a hit in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) using the DNA sample, the main subject left behind. The test revealed that the subject’s name was Jose Bello.

Investigators met with the victim who was presented with a photo array. The victim did identify Bello as familiar to her - even 13 years later. Through investigative methods, SVU detectives located Bello in Hall County, Georgia. BSO detectives coordinated with the Hall County’s Sheriff’s Office in obtaining a DNA warrant for Bello.

BSO SVU detectives traveled to Hall County to interview Bello. He was served the DNA warrant, and a sample was obtained. That sample was submitted to BSO’s Crime Lab for analysis. The result confirmed the initial testing that the DNA found on the victim belonged to Bello.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Bello was arrested and will now face a charge of attempted sexual battery to an incapacitated victim. He is expected to be extradited to Broward County.
