CALEA Accreditation serves as the International Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies. The process of CALEA Accreditation is continuous and serves as the foundation for a successful, well managed, transparent, community-focused public safety agency. The process begins with a rigorous self-assessment, requiring a review of policies, practices, and processes against internationally accepted public safety standards. This is followed by an assessment from independent assessors with significant public safety experience. Additionally, public feedback is received to promote community trust and engagement.
In May, a team of assessors from CALEA will examine the operations of BSO’s Regional Communications Division. In order to retain accredited status, the division must comply with 208 standards. BSO’s Regional Communications Division was first awarded National Accreditation by CALEA in the Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program on July 31, 2010. Since then, it has maintained its accredited status every four years.
BSO’s Regional Communications Division invites community feedback on its compliance with CALEA standards and the delivery of public safety services. Public comment is an important part of the accreditation process. Your input will be used to help identify areas for improvement and to develop strategies for meeting the highest standards. Therefore, BSO encourages citizens to express their commendations or concerns by following the link above to the CALEA public portal to leave a comment.
ABOUT CALEA: In 1979, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) was created through the combined efforts of four major law enforcement organizations: the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, National Sheriffs’ Association and the Police Executive Research Forum.
The purpose of the Commission is to develop standards based on international best practices in public safety and to establish and administer the accreditation process. The accreditation process is how a public safety agency voluntarily demonstrates how it meets professionally recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.
