Description of Incident
Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Homicide Unit are investigating the death of a driver who was shot before crashing into a vehicle in Pembroke Park.
At approximately 12:54 a.m. on Sunday, May 10, Pembroke Park Police Department officers responded to a crash call near the 3900 block of West Hallandale Beach Boulevard. On scene, officers made contact with a witness who stated the victim, identified as Daniel Mathis, was involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown male at the Orion Gas Station located at 3990 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd. At some point, the altercation escalated, and Mathis was shot.
Mathis then attempted to flee the scene in a Dodge Challenger.
Detectives say that as Mathis attempted to enter traffic on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, he drove northbound over the center median, causing a Volkswagen SUV that was traveling westbound to collide with the Challenger in a T-Bone type collision.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported Mathis to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced deceased at approximately 1:36 a.m. The investigation continues.
