Description of Incident
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating the death of a man involved in a hit-and run that occurred Sunday night. Investigators are looking for additional witnesses to come forward.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m., March 22, BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a medical call near the 300 block of Northwest 29th Terrace in unincorporated Central Broward. On scene, paramedics located Humphrey Willoughby unresponsive. BSFR transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. BSO Homicide detectives responded to investigate.
The preliminary investigation revealed Willoughby was driving his vehicle southbound on Northwest 29th Terrace. Meanwhile, Wayne Brutton was seated inside his parked vehicle preparing to back into the driveway of his residence. As Willoughby traveled southbound, his vehicle sideswiped Brutton’s vehicle, causing minor damage to the rear passenger side. Willoughby reversed and inadvertently struck Brutton’s vehicle a second time before fleeing southbound on Northwest 29th Terrace.
Detectives say Brutton exited his vehicle and pursued Willoughby on foot. According to the investigation, witnesses in the area succeeded in stopping Willoughby’s vehicle. A physical altercation ensued between the two men, which ended with Willoughby falling to the ground and become unresponsive.
Brutton was subsequently arrested and transported to Broward County Main Jail. At this time, he faces one count of manslaughter.
