Description of Incident
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a fatal crash involving a scooter driver that occurred Feb. 19, in Pompano Beach.
At approximately 12:48 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a call reporting a crash with injuries near East Copans Road and North Dixie Highway. BSO district deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded.
On scene, deputies learned a crash occurred between a Brightline train and Michael Pappis, who was driving a scooter. Paramedics transported Pappis to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives responded to investigate.
According to detectives, the preliminary investigation determined the train was traveling northbound on the west set of tracks approaching Copans Road. Pappis attempted to cross the tracks west to east despite the active warning signals (lights, bells, and gates) at the grade crossing at Copans Road. The scooter struck the front left side of the Brightline train just behind the nose cone.
After colliding with the train, the scooter and Pappis were projected in a northwest direction where they came to a final rest. The train conducted an emergency stop and came to a final rest north of the grade crossing. No other injuries were reported.
It was determined all safety equipment at the grade crossing was operational.
The investigation is ongoing.
