A bicyclist was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Aug. 7, and detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:29 p.m. last Thursday near the 2700 block of Northeast 14th Street Causeway in Pompano Beach. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, Anastazia Hitz, was crossing the Northeast 14th Street Causeway mid-block from south to north when she was struck by a 2022 Ford F450 which was towing a boat. Detectives say the Ford was traveling westbound in the inside lane when the fatal collision occurred.

According to investigators, the driver of the Ford, Micheal Creque, attempted to avoid the bicyclist by veering to the right. In attempting to do so, the boat trailer attached to the Ford detached, and both the Ford and the trailer continued north towards the curb and sidewalk in that area. The vehicle and trailer came to a final rest in a business parking lot after causing damage to a 2015 BMW 640i and a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan.

BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded, and the bicyclist was transported to Broward Health North. She was later pronounced deceased.

Excessive speed, driver impairment, and mechanical malfunction are not considered
contributing factors in this crash. The investigation continues.
