A bicyclist was killed following a hit-and-run crash, and detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:41 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 8, near the 9500 block of Sheridan Street in Cooper City. The preliminary on-scene investigation revealed that Wendy Carpenter was riding her bicycle westbound on Sheridan Street on the outside edge of the roadway. At the same time, Brian Cooper was also traveling westbound on Sheridan Street in a 2020 Acura TLX, approaching Carpenter from the rear.

According to investigators, as Cooper advanced toward Carpenter, he failed to yield and move over, striking her with the front passenger side of the Acura. The impact projected Carpenter off the bicycle as Cooper fled the scene westbound.

BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded, and paramedics transported Carpenter to Memorial Regional Hospital. She was later pronounced deceased at 12:13 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.

According to investigators, a witness—who observed the collision—followed Cooper to the 10000 block of Cherry Avenue in Pembroke Pines. BSO deputies responded to the location and obtained a search warrant to seize the vehicle. The Acura was then seized as evidence.

The investigation continues.
