Description of Incident
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred on Sunday, Oct. 12, in Pompano Beach. Hours after the crash, BSO deputies located the hit-and-run driver, and detectives arrested him.
According to detectives, just before 12:30 a.m. that morning, a bicyclist, Joseph Henriquez, was traveling westbound within the median break on North Palm Aire Drive. At that time, a 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer was also traveling westbound on North Palm Aire Drive when it struck the bicyclist from the rear. Henriquez was propelled off the bicycle into the eastbound lanes of traffic. He was transported to Broward Health North for treatment. Sadly, on Oct. 13, Henriquez succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash.
Following the crash, the driver of the Trailblazer continued westbound then returned to the crash scene before fleeing the area. Deputies circulated the area searching for the vehicle. It was located at 3621 Oaks Clubhouse Dr. According to detectives, Marcus admitted that he was driving the Trailblazer and knew he was involved in the crash.
As a result of the investigation, detectives arrested Sholom Marcus on Oct. 12 for failing to stop or remain at an accident involving serious bodily injury. Following the victim’s death, the criminal charge was upgraded to leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
The investigation into the crash is active and ongoing.
