Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating a single-vehicle crash that left a 39-year-old man dead in North Lauderdale.

According to investigators, the crash occurred around 6:29 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, near the 1700 block of Southwest 83rd Avenue. The preliminary on-scene investigation revealed that the driver, Christopher Lucas, was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry traveling southbound on Southwest 83rd Avenue approaching the bend at Southwest 17th Street. Detectives say, for an unknown reason, Lucas failed to negotiate the curve and continued southbound over the raised concrete curb, through a metal fence and struck a building.

Investigators say, the Camry sustained minor damage because of the impact with the building. The building sustained damage due to flooding from the water lines being damaged.

North Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported the 39-year-old to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Detectives say that based on the minor damage to both the vehicle and the building, and this being a slow speed impact crash, they believe it is possible that Lucas suffered a medical event. Lucas family also advised he suffered from a preexisting health condition.

The investigation continues.
