You Are Not Alone

Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, background or circumstances. Abuse can take many forms and may include physical violence, threats, intimidation, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, stalking, isolation or controlling behavior.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Domestic violence is not always physical. Warning signs may include a partner who:

  • Controls where you go, who you see or who you communicate with

  • Is extremely jealous or possessive

  • Insults, humiliates or constantly criticizes you

  • Threatens you, your children, family members or pets

  • Prevents you from working, attending school or seeing family and friends

  • Controls your money or prevents you from accessing finances

  • Monitors your phone, email, social media or location

  • Destroys your belongings or damages property

  • Pushes, hits, kicks, chokes or otherwise physically harms you

  • Pressures or forces you into sexual activity

  • Threatens to hurt themselves or others as a way to control you

  • Blames you for their abusive behavior

  • Makes you feel afraid of what may happen if you disagree with them or try to leave

You do not have to wait for an emergency to seek help.

Create a Safety Plan

A safety plan is a personalized plan that can help you prepare for situations in which you may be at risk. Because every situation is different, consider speaking with a trained victim advocate or domestic violence professional when developing a plan.

Depending on your circumstances, a safety plan may include:

  • Identifying a safe place you can go in an emergency

  • Knowing the safest way to leave your home

  • Keeping important phone numbers readily available

  • Identifying trusted family members, friends or neighbors who can help

  • Establishing a code word to alert someone that you need assistance

  • Keeping identification, medications, keys, important documents and essential items accessible

  • Considering the safety needs of your children and pets

  • Planning how you will safely access money and transportation

  • Considering whether your phone, computer, accounts or location may be monitored

Important: If you believe your internet or device activity is being monitored, consider using a safer device to seek assistance.
