Captain Matthew Cowart

Court Services

Captain Matthew Cowart began his law enforcement career with the Broward Sheriff’s Office in 2015 as a deputy sheriff assigned to the North Lauderdale District. During his tenure in the North Lauderdale District, he worked as a road patrol deputy, field training deputy, and as a detective in the North Lauderdale District’s Criminal Investigations Unit. In 2019, he was selected to work in the Criminal Investigations Division as a detective in the Violent Crimes Unit. He was promoted to sergeant in 2021, where he was assigned to the Weston District, supervising road patrol deputies and civilian staff.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 2023. As a lieutenant, he was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division as the executive officer where he assisted in overseeing the Violent Crimes Section, Major Crimes Section, and Administrative Support Section. As a lieutenant, he also served as the executive officer for the Court Services District where he assisted in overseeing law enforcement services provided to the 17th Judicial Circuit and the Broward County Governmental Center. In 2026, he was promoted to captain of the Court Services District.

He has a master’s degree in emergency management and homeland security from Arizona State University. He also has a bachelor’s degree in public safety administration from Florida Atlantic University, an associate in science degree in criminal justice from Broward College, and an associate in arts degree from Broward College. He has completed the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (LEEDA) Command Leadership Institute and Northwestern University’s Executive Management Program.

He is a member of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
