Deputy Christopher Schaub

May 21, 1965 - September 26, 2012

Deputy Christopher Schaub, a 22-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office, beloved father and dedicated friend to many, died Wednesday from injuries he suffered in a traffic crash in Pompano Beach. He was 47.

Dep. Schaub was born May 21, 1965 at St. Mary's Hospital in Orange, New Jersey. His parents, Preston and Lillian Schaub, preceded him in death. 

Preston Schaub was a 30-year veteran of the Essex County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey. Dep. Schaub followed in his father's footsteps and started his law enforcement career with the Livingston Police Department in New Jersey where he was a patrolman from 1985 to 1989. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Livingston Fire Department from May 1987 until September 1988.

In 1989, Dep. Schaub did a 6-month stint as an investigator with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office in New Jersey before joining the Broward Sheriff's Office in 1990. At BSO, he worked road patrol, in the detective bureau and most recently in Pompano Beach as a motorman with the traffic unit.

Dep. Schaub's personnel file is filled with awards and letters of commendation from police chiefs, supervisors, peers and the public for his excellent work and dedication. He was named the Pompano Beach district's Employee of the Month in July 2004 for quickly locating and arresting a man who was stalking a young woman and for uncovering a drug ring in the same month. He earned the same honor in November 2007 for the arrests of three strong-arm robbery suspects and in January 2008 for his quick response to a carjacking, which resulted in the recovery of the stolen vehicle and arrest of the suspect.

"Like Chris, we do not know what the outcome of the day will be, but we still get up, put on our uniforms and protect the citizens of Broward County. A career in public safety is not for everyone, but it was the one Chris chose and excelled in," Sheriff Al Lamberti said. "He knew the dangers of law enforcement. He understood that working with the motor unit involved even more potential hazards and accepted the challenge. He gave his life serving his community."

His son, Tim, continues the family's law enforcement tradition and proudly serves the BSO as a deputy sheriff in Pompano Beach. Dep. Schaub is also survived by his daughter, Kaitlyn Schaub; his brother, Raymond Schaub; sisters, Cynthia Schaub and Barbara Chiaputti; his girlfriend, Kimberly Longo and her children Kayla & Tyler Longo and a host of nieces and nephews.
