Last week Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony provided an unequivocal warning to reckless drivers, street racers and intersection takeover crews – quit your antics or face arrest and the loss of your car. After another successful BSO operation on Friday night targeting these dangerous activities, maybe the message will sink in.
In this latest incident, using investigative means, deputies with BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team (B.A.T.) began surveilling a group of 60-70 drivers around 11 p.m. on Friday, March 10 in the 5300 block of West Atlantic Boulevard in Margate. Detectives witnessed six drivers performing reckless maneuvers, such as spinning out their tires at a high rate of speed, in a shopping plaza with customers exiting and entering stores and restaurants.
The drivers then gathered at a gas station nearby, and B.A.T. and deputies from several BSO districts seized an opportunity to move in. Based on what deputies witnessed in the shopping plaza, deputies arrested six individuals and seized six vehicles.
Friday’s arrests came one week after B.A.T. detectives arrested three individuals and seized three cars following intersection takeovers and reckless driving in the Fort Lauderdale area on Friday, March 3. More information on that incident can be found

These arrests highlight BSO’s ongoing commitment to slam the brakes on this behavior.
“We’re going to continue to exercise this type of aggressive enforcement activity,” Sheriff Gregory Tony said. “These stunts, these daredevils, these reckless drivers, these careless drivers, you’re not going to get a break from me. You’re not going to get a break from any of my deputies. We’re going to make sure we safeguard the streets of Broward County.”
All six individuals arrested on Friday are being charged under a new Florida law, F.S.S. 316.191 that went into effect last October and targets racing on highways, street takeovers and stunt driving. The law affects not only drivers who participate in these activities but also those who coordinate the events through social media, spectate or knowingly ride as a passenger.
