Homicide detectives are asking the public’s help to identify the person who opened fire on a car, killed one man and injured a second the evening of July 3 in Dania Beach.
Just before midnight, a 2008 gray 4-door Chevy Impala was traveling westbound on Northwest 3rd Street approaching Northwest 9th Avenue when an unidentified individual began firing multiple shots at the vehicle.
The driver fled the car after being shot in the leg. Deputies located him about two blocks from the scene after a good Samaritan called 911 to report an injured man in the roadway.
The car coasted and came to rest against a tree. In the car’s passenger seat, deputies found the body of Prentice Mathis, 48, who had been shot multiple times.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported the driver to Memorial Regional Hospital. He received treatment for his injury and was subsequently released.
Homicide detectives are withholding the driver’s name for his protection. The murder investigation is ongoing.
