Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating Thursday’s fatal crash in Oakland Park involving a vehicle and a Brightline train.
Around 10:30 a.m. Sept. 12, BSO deputies responded to a call at the railroad crossing at Northeast 34th Court and North Dixie Highway. A 2014 white Maserati was traveling northbound on Dixie Highway when the driver turned right onto Northeast 34th Court and approached the railroad crossing. All four crossing gates had been lowered and warning bells were sounding as a freight train approached from the north and a Brightline train approached from the south.
The driver of the Maserati, Clivet Romero, bypassed the crossing gates and cleared the first track, but landed in the path of the northbound Brightline train. From the impact, the rear end of the car was wedged under the Brightline train and burst into flames. Romero was killed on impact.
The Brightline conductor, who attempted to extinguish the fire, was transported to a nearby hospital by Oakland Park Fire Rescue and treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
The traffic homicide investigation is ongoing.
