Victim(s): Sonny Rugani, 17, male, 5/31/02, 3901 Wild Lime Lane, Coral Springs (DECEASED)

Suspect(s): N/A

Description of Incident:

A Broward teen, who was arrested by the Coral Springs Police Department (CSPD) on June 1 and Baker Acted, hanged himself Sunday at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail two and a half months after being cleared and released from a mental health hospital.

Shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, a BSO detention deputy was conducting a physical check of inmates when he discovered 17-year-old Sonny Rugani had attempted suicide. The deputies and medical staff at the jail rendered immediate assistance. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported the inmate to Broward Health Medical Center where he was hospitalized. On Wednesday, Sept. 4, Rugani was pronounced deceased at 12:07 p.m.

Rugani was initially arrested by CSPD on June 1 on grand theft and burglary charges. During that arrest, he made threats against his own life, and officers transported him to University Hospital & Medical Center under the Baker Act, where he remained under care until he was cleared and released by medical staff on June 12. Upon his release, CSPD officers transported Rugani to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing, and he was booked into the Broward Juvenile Detention Center. After being charged as an adult, on June 25 Rugani was transported and booked into the BSO Main Jail. Though he had been cleared by medical professionals two weeks prior, medical staff at the jail placed Rugani on suicide watch as a precaution. After two days of observation, he was transferred to the juvenile general population housing. During the two months Rugani remained at the jail, he did not exhibit or express suicidal tendencies and participated daily in the educational and juvenile Life Skills programs.

The investigation into his suicide is ongoing.
