Description of Incident:
An 18-year-old man died nearly a week after being involved in a two-vehicle crash, and detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:42 p.m., on Sunday, May 21, near the 8100 block of Southgate Boulevard in Tamarac. The preliminary investigation revealed Nicole Rivera-Vazquez and a juvenile passenger were traveling eastbound in a gray 2023 Toyota Corolla on Southgate Boulevard within the outside-thru lane. At the same time, Michael Mills Jr. and Jaileen Mitchell were in a gray 2011 Infinity G37, also traveling eastbound.

According to investigators, Rivera-Vazquez attempted to change lanes by maneuvering the Toyota into the inside-thru lane. At some point, the rear driver’s side of the vehicle struck the front passenger side of the Infinity, and both cars entered the center median. Once in the median, the Infinity struck a tree and came to a final rest. The Toyota continued through the median, hit a small tree, and traveled into the opposing westbound traffic lanes, where it came to a controlled stop facing eastbound.

BSO deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue responded. Paramedics transported Mills Jr. to Broward Health North for treatment of his injuries. Mitchell, the female passenger in the Infinity, was also transported to an area hospital for treatment.

On May 27, detectives with BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit were notified that Mills Jr. had succumbed to his extensive injuries.

Detectives say excessive speed is not considered a factor in this crash. The investigation continues.
