Shortly after releasing surveillance footage of a man swinging a sword at an Oakland Park jogger, Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives received a Crime Stoppers tip identifying the man. On Monday, he was arrested and booked into the BSO Main Jail facing one count of attempted murder.
Curtis Miller, 56, was identified as the man captured on surveillance video on July 15, fighting for a heavy-duty dump cart with a samurai sword. On Sept. 23, members of the Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) team located him at a home in North Lauderdale and arrested him without incident.
On the evening of the attack, the victim, Todd Beavers, had gone for a jog around his neighborhood when he stumbled upon a bulk trash pile in front of a home and decided to stake claim to the heavy-duty dump cart. He noticed a man in a white, older-model pickup was also perusing through the items. When the man noticed Beavers was taking the dump cart, he became upset and followed Beavers home to fight over the item.
Miller was also booked on outstanding warrants for driving with a revoked license.
