Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, in collaboration with the Miami Police Department, arrested Paul Olivier, Daequan Griffin and a 17-year-old male in connection to an attempted robbery turned shooting that killed one and injured another in Oakland Park.
The incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, near the 3000 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard. According to investigators, BSO Oakland Park District deputies were in the area responding to a disturbance call at a local flea market. The call was related to a music video shoot. While on-scene, deputies heard multiple gunshots coming from a nearby gas station, unrelated to the music video. The deputies immediately responded to that scene and located two gunshot wound victims.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue also responded, and one of the victims was pronounced deceased on scene, while the other was transported to an area hospital by paramedics.
Witnesses on scene told investigators several subjects approached the victims prior to the shooting and that the subjects fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle.
While investigating the incident, detectives learned the shooting occurred during an attempted robbery. The suspects targeted the victims for a necklace and a Rolex watch.
On Friday, Sept. 22, BSO investigators released the deceased victim’s information to the public. A Broward County Crime Stoppers flyer with a reward of up to $5,000 was also issued for information that led to an arrest in this case. Then, on Oct. 3, investigators released surveillance video of the vehicle believed to have been involved in the attempted robbery turned shooting.
Through investigative methods, detectives identified 22-year-old Olivier, 22-year-old Griffin and a 17-year-old male as the suspects involved, and arrest warrants were issued thereafter.
According to investigators, Miami Police arrested Griffin and the 17-year-old in September on unrelated warrants stemming from an armed robbery incident that occurred in Miami earlier this year. The two now face additional charges of first-degree murder in the Oakland Park case.
On Friday, Nov. 3, BSO investigators took Olivier into custody at his residence in Lauderdale Lakes on the BSO warrant. He faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts of probation violation. Additional charges are pending.
Detectives believe the suspects may have been involved in other similar robberies throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties and are asking anyone with information to contact BSO Homicide Detective John Curcio at 954-321-4212 or MPD Robbery Sgt. Blake Weigner at 305-791-6710.
The investigation continues.
