Description of Incident:

The man sought by Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives for his role in the homicide of Carolyn Espinosa killed himself overnight during a standoff with law enforcement in Highlands County that lasted more than two hours.

At 3:52 p.m. May 1, Broward County Regional Communications received a call of a death at 3673 San Simeon Circle in Weston. Responding deputies discovered the body of a female, identified as Carolyn Espinosa, inside the residence. 

Homicide detectives issued a warrant for the arrest of Angel Garcia Sanchez, the victim’s husband. The couple had separated, and the victim had recently begun the process of filing for a divorce. 

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, the U.S. Marshal’s Task Force and Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives attempted to take Angel Garcia Sanchez into custody at his home located at 558 Sheppard Road in Venus the evening of May 2. 

Officers attempted to make contact with Sanchez but received no response. Sanchez was later discovered inside the home, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation later revealed that when the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team armored vehicle approached the home, Sanchez fired several shots in their direction. No officers were injured.
