A 40-year-old man is dead, and a 19-year-old man is injured after an adult male and a clerk were robbed in Dania Beach. Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
According to investigators, shortly before 7 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 6, Broward County Regional Communications received reports of a shooting near the 600 block of Stirling Road. BSO deputies responded and determined the shooting occurred following two separate armed robberies at the 7-Eleven located at 800 Stirling Road.
According to investigators, Justin Kessel robbed an adult male at gunpoint in the parking lot of 7-Eleven before entering the business and robbing the clerk. While exiting the business, witnesses say Kessel ran back toward the male robbery victim, who had retrieved a firearm from his vehicle. Detectives said the victim fired multiple shots, injuring Kessel. The victim told investigators that, as he proceeded to hold Kessel at gunpoint until deputies arrived, another subject in a gray 2025 Honda CR-V attempted to run him over. In fear for his life, the victim stated he jumped out of the moving vehicle’s way and fired additional shots.
Kessel was taken into custody and transported by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue to an area hospital for treatment. The adult male victim was detained for questioning and later released.
During the investigation, the CR-V was located by detectives in the 100 block of Phippen Waiters Road in Dania Beach. The driver of the vehicle, Melvin Presley, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported by paramedics to Memorial Regional Hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the circumstances of the robbery turned shooting remains active and ongoing. BSO detectives are working with the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine if further charges will be filed against the adult victim in this case.
