A subject caught on camera punching an elderly man exiting a store in Lauderdale Lakes has been arrested. According to detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit, the attacker, identified as 29-year-old Joseph McFadden, was taken into custody by Sunrise Police on Friday, Nov. 17, near the 3300 block of North University Drive in Sunrise.

The battery occurred just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Walmart store, located at 3001 N. State Road 7. Surveillance video shows an elderly man exiting the store with a shopping bag in his hand. As he gets past the first set of sliding doors, the subject punches the victim in the face. Detectives said the subject was a tall, thin male wearing a navy sweater with grey lettering on the front, black pants and flip flops. The attacker then turns and leaves the entryway to the store, heading north towards Oakland Park Boulevard on foot.

Detectives say the attacker did not steal anything from the victim, and the victim does not know the attacker and did not have words with him prior to the incident. The victim sustained minor injuries.

During the course of the investigation, detectives identified McFadden as the suspect, and a warrant was obtained for his arrest. McFadden faces one count of aggravated battery on a person 65 years of age or older.
