Description of Incident:

On Saturday, a 29-year-old man who was speeding on an Oakland Park street was killed when he lost control of his car. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit is investigating the single-vehicle crash.

Around 7:10 a.m. Dec. 15, Julio C. Arias Jr. was headed north on North Dixie Highway and approaching the 4300 block when he failed to negotiate the roadway’s curve. According to THI detectives, Arias was going nearly double the speed limit of 35 mph when he overcorrected his 2008 Scion tC. His vehicle spun clockwise and slid across the pavement before colliding into a concrete pole.

BSO deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Arias, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives believe excessive speed is the primary cause of the crash and possible impairment could be a contributing factor. Their investigation continues.
