As Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Sunday to a stabbing at a West Park motel, officers in Pembroke Pines received a call notifying them that a woman wanted to report she had stabbed a man. The two calls linked to the same fatal incident.
Just before 8 a.m. June 23, the first 911 caller told BSO dispatchers that a neighbor at The Corner Motel in West Park had been stabbed and was bleeding on the floor. The man, identified as 55-year-old Herbert Butler, was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital where he later died.
BSO Homicide detectives working the stabbing were notified by Pembroke Pines Police officers they had BSO’s suspect. According to 32-year-old Janae Jarrell-Moody, she and Butler were acquaintances. She had gone to Butler’s room Sunday morning to charge her phone. While she was charging, Butler asked to borrow her car, but she refused the request. Butler became upset and tried to take her purse by force. Jarrell-Moody managed to escape the attack and fled on foot. However, after a few minutes, she returned. She armed herself with a knife she had in her vehicle and attacked Butler as he threw out the trash.
Jarrell-Moody’s single stab to Butler’s chest fatally wounded him. She’s been booked into the BSO Main Jail facing one count of first-degree murder.
