The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a dirt bike crash that left a 16-year-old dead.
Shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, July 19, Broward Regional Communications received a call about a single motor vehicle crash near the 4100 block of Southwest 18th Street in unincorporated Central Broward. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 16-year-old juvenile was traveling on a green Kawasaki KLX 140 dirt bike southbound on Southwest 40th Terrace, approaching the intersection of Southwest 18th Street.
According to investigators, the juvenile was unable to stop the Kawasaki and continued past a stop sign, traveled between two parked cars and struck a chain-link fence before hitting a house. Detectives believe the dirt bike possibly suffered a brake failure. A witness on scene stated that the dirt bike was known to experience brake failures when the brakes heated up and that the driver was aware of this mechanical issue.
BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded, and the 16-year-old was transported to Broward Health Medical Center to be treated for life-threatening injuries. On Tuesday, July 20, investigators were advised that the juvenile was pronounced deceased at 6 a.m. that morning.
The investigation continues.
