A pedestrian died approximately six months after being hit by a vehicle in Wilton Manors, and Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The crash occurred around 6:38 a.m., Monday, June 21, 2021. The on scene investigation revealed that the victim was walking northbound in the bicycle lane near the 2100 block of Northeast 15th Avenue in Wilton Manors. At the same time, Mark Horton was traveling northbound in a 2011 Ford Focus on Northeast 15th Avenue in the designated traffic lane.
At some point, Horton’s vehicle entered the bike lane and struck the victim from behind. The Ford then continued through the grass shoulder before coming to a final rest back on the roadway within the bike lane. The victim came to a final rest within a paved portion of the shoulder.
Wilton Manors Police Department and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded, and the victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The driver remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation.
On Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, investigators with BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit were notified that the victim had died due to the injuries he sustained from the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
