Description of Incident:

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian in Lauderhill early Friday morning.

At approximately 1:23 a.m. on Friday, July 28, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a traffic crash with injuries in the 5500 block of North University Drive in Lauderhill. Lauderhill Police and Lauderhill Fire Rescue responded. Lauderhill Police requested the assistance of BSO’s traffic homicide detectives.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of a 2018 Honda Accord, Javern Edward Malik Nolan, was traveling northbound on North University Drive approaching Commercial Boulevard when a pedestrian attempted to cross the road. There were no marked pedestrian crosswalks where the pedestrian attempted to cross.

Detectives say the driver of the Honda attempted to swerve to avoid the pedestrian, and the pedestrian attempted to run across the street to avoid being struck. However, the pedestrian continued into the path of the vehicle. Paramedics pronounced the pedestrian deceased on scene.

Following the crash, the driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. Neither excessive speed nor impairment are considered contributing factors in the crash.
