The Broward Sheriff’s Office schooled drivers and pedestrians on how to navigate school zones during a weeklong enforcement that ended on Friday.
From April 22 – 26, eight BSO districts participated in the statewide Florida Sheriff’s Association Task Force “Operation School Zone Safety” campaign. The proactive enforcement is designed to educate the public traveling in school zones -- whether people are on foot, riding a bike or in a car -- about applicable state laws.
During BSO’s operation, deputies in Dania Beach, Central Broward, Cooper City, Deerfield Beach, Lauderdale Lakes, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park and Weston issued 97 warnings and 180 citations for offenses such as passing a stopped bus, walking outside of a designated crosswalk or exceeding the posted speed limit of 15 mph.
