Description of Incident:

Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating the death of a Fort Lauderdale man who crashed into a canal on Saturday in Lauderdale Lakes.

Around 3:53 a.m. March 30, a BSO Oakland Park deputy observed De’Andre Belim Jr., trying to break into vehicles in the area of 117 Lake Emerald Drive. The deputy attempted to stop Belim on foot. However, according to the incident report, he ran away, jumped over a wall and climbed into the driver’s seat of a gray Ford Escape SUV.

Six minutes later, Regional Communications received a report that a vehicle was sinking in a canal near Northwest 31st Avenue and Northwest 39th Street in Lauderdale Lakes. BSO’s dive and aviation teams responded to the scene, along with BSO’s Traffic Homicide Investigation detectives and Oakland Park Fire Rescue. The divers searched for occupants to no avail.

According to THI detectives, prior to the crash Belim was traveling west on Northwest 39th Street when he tried to turn south onto Northwest 31st Avenue in Lauderdale Lakes. It was at that point, he lost control of the SUV. The Escape hit a utility box and guardrail, before it went airborne and landed in the canal.

It would be two days later before Belim’s body was found. On April 1, Regional Communications received a call around 8:55 a.m. that a body was in the canal near Northwest 31st Avenue and Northwest 39th Street. BSO divers recovered the body, and the Oakland Park deputy who initially spotted Belim identified him as the person who fled on March 30. The 25-year-old’s identity was separately confirmed by THI detectives and The Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services.

It was also determined that the Escape was reported stolen from Lauderdale Lakes on March 28.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact THI Detective Anthony Morales at 954-321-4840 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or www.browardcrimestoppers.org
