BSO’S REAL TIME CRIME CENTER SEEKS PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP TO REDUCE CRIME

Broward Sheriff's Office: Public Information Office

PIO Number: 21-9-6

Date: Sept.9. 2021

If you own a business in Broward County and want to help reduce crime and catch criminals, the Broward Sheriff’s Office wants to partner with you.

BSO’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) is rolling out an updated initiative to partner with private businesses, houses of worship and other entities to crack down on crime through technology. The partnership works like this: a business owner either installs cameras in their business or allows their existing compatible cameras with public-facing views to be directly connected to BSO’s RTCC. This enables the RTCC to have access to the cameras on an as-needed basis, for instance, when a critical incident or emergency unfolds at or near the property. In those situations, deputies and detectives will be able to see what is occurring as they respond to the scene.

This partnership produces many benefits. First, it allows business owners to play a vital role in the safety and protection of their community. Second, it gives RTCC detectives an opportunity to see what is occurring in real time to provide critical information to first responders in the field in order to assist with investigations of criminal activity and potentially arrest people committing crimes. Third, with cameras in their business, business owners may qualify for a financial incentive, such as an insurance policy discount.

BSO will not monitor the cameras 24/7, and BSO does not charge a fee to participate in the program. The camera equipment and any monthly fees are paid for by the business or entity, and the cameras are owned by the business or entity, not BSO. To sign up, a business owner or other entity needs to sign a memorandum of understanding and contact a BSO-approved vendor to install the camera equipment.
