Description of Incident:

A 2-year-old boy was found unresponsive by a kayaker after his father feared he had fallen into a canal Thursday night.

At approximately 6:46 p.m. Sept. 19, deputies responded to 340 S.E. Sixth Ave. in Pompano Beach after receiving a missing person call.  Upon their arrival, they learned the father believed the child may have fallen into the canal located behind the house. Deputies began examining the canal with the help of a kayaker who, with the use of his paddle, located the child and passed him up to deputies. The deputies immediately started performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with the help of two neighbors, a pediatrician and a paramedic, until Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived. The child was transported to Imperial Point Hospital and later transferred to Broward Health Medical Center where he remained in critical condition until he was pronounced dead at 6:57 a.m. Friday morning (Sept. 20).

The boy’s body was transported to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy. At this time no criminal charges have been filed; however, the investigation is ongoing and remains an active case.
